Sick at Nero

I have decided there is something worse than Finals: being sick at Nero. This weekend was War of Ages, a sub-campaign with a high death count, and I spent most of it freezing my ass off with a runny nose and a migrane. I ended up going home at Midnight on Saturday. A hot shower and a warm bed and a warm James and I was mostly better.

WoA looks like a really cool game. My team, the mechnons (humanoid robots) were a pain in he butt to fight bacause they're al the old-school Nero players. heck, for an NPC, I was one of the best and some of the newer Staff thought I was a kick-butt fighter. I'm only a middling stick-jock, but compared to the barely competent folks at WoA, I wasn't bad.

But I did feel like I'd been playing Nero forever. And Brian turning 18 made me feel old, despite only being 22.

Life centers around work, have you noticed that? I'm working two jobs and going to school. Yuk. Mondays and Wednesdays I have class, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays I work for Daz. For $8 an hour. Which sux. I also tutor my friend Sarah for $15 an hour, when she needs me and neither one of us is too fried. Which seems to be two to three nights a week.

Today we worked on her new Block Assignment. Being at the Waldorf School, she gets to study all sorts of neat things and compile booklets on them. I helped her figgure out how long things would take to draw, and which buildings to pick. She also prefers simplistic Roman Architecture to Cathedrals, yay! Sooo much easier to draw and analyze.

Howdy folks, I'm back on LiveJournal! Haven't posted in forever, but that's ok.

This weekend was Arisia, the biggest Sci-Fi convention in Boston. There's also Boskone, but it is a tame, boring convention and generally sux.

I managed to have fun, despite many goof-ups and mis-haps. It started on Thursday, when we discovered that the hotel was Sold Out. Not a problem, my boss, Daz, always gets two rooms, one for his extra crap so he can hold parties. But since I helped pack, he didn't have all that extra stuff, so he could let James and I share the room with some friends from NY. So we had a room.

But, Jon, a techie computer fix-it person, tried to work on Friday. Bad idea, Jon. I had to call several times to convince him to stop trying to fix the FUBAR machine and get his butt on the road. He finally left...at 5:00. On a holiday weekend. In the midst of Rush Hour. Nicole also had to work, and was comming in from Upstate New York. They both arrived at 9:30 and 10:00.

We got to the con at midnight, just in time to miss registration. I forgot to pre-reg, so we unpacked and trolled. This is when James, Nicole and Jon discovered the principle of Everyone Knows Anakin. No, really. Amost 25% of the people know me by name, because I am The Fan Girl Named Anakin. I forget most of them, but that's ok.

Saturday was odd. I got up, got food, went to register, and we had a Fire Alarm. By the time it was all calmed down, Reg had closed, I was seperated from my friends, and I had to go to the Nero booth for How to Play the Game newbie intro. There, my friend Brian put scar masking liquid on over my undead make-up. It still hasn't come off as I write this. Thank you, Brian!

Sarah showed up when the Nero stuff was mostly done. She had gone to a movie the night before, gotten home after midnight, and was a total space cadet. Plus, she showed up looking like a preppie. No one goes to a con looking like a preppie!! Aaaahhh! I made her change. And then had to heard her around. -I- was not that clueless at 18!

The Masquerade was cool. Sarah went home. I bought a wooden hammer that -I- can swing YAY! James, Jon and Nicole went off to a Bondage party, but I was falling asleep. So I ended up shooing the shit with Matt, Chris and Kelly until 3:00 in the morning. And hitting on Pinky. Who is far too cute. But always has far too many girls hanging around for me to feel comfortable propositioning him. Aaaarrrggghhh!

Today was mostly devoted to James last-minute shopping. I now have three pairs of earrings - yay! We did the Sunday Sundae, and pigged out on ice cream. And gave my LJ name to some folks, but forgot to write down theirs. Please post, if you ran into me at the con!

That's about it. I had fun, saw lots of people I han't seen in a year. And I handed out a ton of cards to people who liked my chain mail.

Fun With Staff Positions

Back in January, Ed Kenny who runs Nero Necro needed a Weapon Safety Marshall to check our boffer swords. I said, “I’m not officially trained, but I can check weapons if you need me to,” and he said, “Great, you’re our Marshal. By the way, you do realize you’re Staff now, right?”

My response was, “I’m what? Oh well, I always wanted to help run a chapter.” So I give Ed my connect info – and find out that we live in the same town – and he says he’ll call me. I send him a list of Things He Needs to Buy, as well as a cost-breakdown for weapon materials. He replies with “We’re saving for the In-Game Gold pieces.”

I didn’t hear from him for several months, until I run into him on the bus. We talked, he promises to call, which he doesn’t. I run into him at a Boston event, and he’s going on about all the stuff his plot team is putting together. No offers to include me or keep me posted. I was getting a little annoyed.

So when the NeroBoston staff team sends me an invite to join their game and actually get to come to staff meetings and contribute to a real Nero chapter, I’m ready to drop Ed like a hot brick. I guarantee he’ll whine and bitch and claim he had me first. Tough cookies, Ed, I want to help a real game.

It was exhasuting – there were tons of people here, and a good number of them hadn’t sent in their Lisence Renewals, and couldn’t get into the auction until Terry cleared them. Poor Terry – she’s decided I’m a Loud Person, like Judi our boss, and spent the whole morning having one or both of us yell for her.

Lora, Judi says she wants to kill you for not being here, it was insane.

Nero was fun, if rainy. Played the Guildmistress for most of the time. Realized that I am turning into a copy if Joe Siegal -- during one event, I have:

Fought Sword-Board
Used a kite tape weapon
Run off to take care of a problem while abandoning my bodyguards
And Pontificated at somebody in an attempt to make them feel insignificant.

The weekend went well, until after the game ended. We left the site, noticed the battery light was on, and mentioned it to everyone at dinner. Not a half-hour after dinner, we're driving along, and the car's CD player went out. We pulled over as the battery was dying, and got really lucky that Joe and Lora were behind us. Car got towed, and we moved the essentials to Lora's car...forgetting that my glasses and contact case was still in Tanye's box. So I had to sleep in them agian last night. And this morning, I woke up to find I'd caught Joe's cold. The alternator's at fault; it's getting fixed tomorow.

I have always adored Ray, since he played a kick-ass Darth Maul in Episode 1. I didn't see any Star Wars refrences this time, but I may have missed it. I didn't realize NightCrawler was a devout Catholic -- it added real depth to the character.

Without trying to spoil anything, does anyone else think the end sequence was a little...incomplete?
Neffa, the New England Folk Festival, was fun. I didn't go dancing, but ran into my friend Troy, and snuggled. He's trying to drag me to SCA events. Ack, another thing to take up my time! But I've always wanted to do the SCA, and as long as it doesen't interfere with Nero, I just might give it a shot.

And Lora and Joe showed up yesterday for post-event kidbits. which was fun. Now I just have to drag the details of what happened out of them. That's the only thing we didn't talk about much.

Now I have to go over Joe's house to pick up foam, because I have to finish his two swords, plus make Joe K's and Ace's. And her shield. Wheee, this is going to be a fun week. Oh, did I mention that I have to finish studding Lora's armor?

Working a problem out.

This started off as a comment in lnitefall’s journal, and I’m expanding it into a full post.

I have…an unusual ability. I can read people. Part of it comes from my ability to see auras –no, I won’t call it magic, but it’s a bit like the Force— and the rest comes from unnaturally keen observation coupled with my personal experiences and being the person who everyone cries to. I’ve seen so many people with emotional problems, and been able to compare them to behavioral patterns that I can make inferences based on body language and habits.

Sigh. Sometimes this Gift of Trueseeing is a curse -- I see the problem, but have no clue what to do to fix it. I can read people like books, but don't want to speak up for fear of making them uncomfortable. But at the same time, when somebody tell me they’re having a problem, even if they don’t speak of it directly, I feel the need to help them. But can I really justify, oh, going to Joe and saying “I know you have deep emotional issues in dealing with self-esteem and I’d like to reassure you that you are a wonderful, worthy person.” I want to – I want to with all my being – but I don’t want him to treat me like a leper for realizing he’s got issues. I mean, the whole reason he builds his walls is to keep people from seeing how hurt he is; how would he react to me tearing them down in a heartbeat? He might open up and let me talk to him and help him – or he might shut me out completely and never want to speak to me again.

And Joe’s not the only one – I can see issues like this with almost all my friends. I want to help, but should I? At least lnitefall’s on the right track, getting him to open up through a relationship. I’d have done the same, except he turned me down. I think he sees too much of the innocent projection I make, as a way to guard what I really know. I play the fool, to keep others from realizing the extent of my knowledge, but I think in this case, I’m shooting myself in the foot.

Maybe the three f us could sit down and have a long talk sometime?

AAAAARRRGGGHHH!!!!! Is that man trying to play with both our heads? Oh, wait, knowing He of the Sexy Eyes, the answer is most definitely “Yes.”

Men!

Although in our D&D game last night, he was referring to lnitefall as his “girlfriend.” This seems like progress. Of course, he seduced both our characters, but that doesn’t say much, as we were the only women playing. I did make a point of telling him to give her a good snuggling because she really needed it. And got kicked in the butt –literally— for my efforts. Who, me? Drop anvils? Never!!

And Jamesie managed to discover my fear of Not Being on Solid Ground. Heights don’t scare me. Close spaces don’t scare me. Being on the swaying limb of a tree some 50 feet up doesn’t scare me. Hanging from a rope, rock-climbing, and being picked up for a hug – now that scares me. I don’t know why, exactly, but I just don’t feel comfortable without a solid surface under me. Maybe it’s because I’m an Architect, or maybe it’s something else; I just don’t know. I can be carried, but not picked up without being supported.
